Here at Save An Orphan, we are committed to transforming the lives of orphaned children. We are leading the way in providing specialist and complete orphan care and recognise our responsibility towards vulnerable children, widows, and their communities. We are constantly working on helping to alleviate poverty and build brighter futures.

We are based in the UK but we operate extensively on a global scale. We reach out to orphans in impoverished places across the world, including Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

Working on the principle of sustainability, we save orphans, widows and their children and we do so without compromising their future independence. In fact, a large amount of our work focuses on creating practical livelihood programmes in farming, sewing and livestock so the families of orphans can maintain a regular income and rebuild a healthy and stable life. Our work makes sure that orphan lives are not only saved, but revitalised, to keep them contented and free from poverty for the rest of their lives.

Your donation is fundamental to our work, and we want to demonstrate just how much we appreciate your help by making sure your donation goes towards credible, remarkable care solutions.

One Global Mission

Here at Save An Orphan we believe in the ‘action now’ philosophy. We’re always prepared to “get stuck in” and offer support and assistance where it is needed most, all over the world. Natural disasters leave thousands of children orphaned every year and Save An Orphan is dedicated to helping orphans in these areas as much as we can.

It is not only disaster-stricken areas that we focus on, but anywhere where children need our help. Children have the right to clean water, shelter, clothing and proper sanitation — we aim to ensure that children receive these most basic of requirements. Get involved today and help to make a real difference!

The model orphanage

Save An Orphan aims to raise the standard of orphanages by creating a ‘model orphanage’ – where a set of standards are implemented throughout our projects.

We often come across orphanages that are in need of a whole lot of love and attention. We will help with repairs and rebuilding to sufficiently accommodate the orphans so they receive the best care possible. We will also ensure that there is adequate shelter, good sanitation, clean drinking water and access to education – including a play and learning zone where children can learn through recreation.

We will forge relations with local governments to provide effective healthcare and train the orphanage staff to provide all the care and support the children need, both physically and emotionally.

Save An Orphan will also implement adequate sanitation which may include new/repaired toilets, bathing areas/showers and waste disposal systems. To combat disease, such as malaria, we train all the staff and provide enhanced guttering systems to ensure stagnant water cannot gather – a huge contributor to the spreading of bacteria. Regular health checks will be carried out by authorised doctors and trained medics to ensure that orphans will receive a good level of healthcare.

We hope that consistency of care in the orphanages will improve the health of staff and orphans alike

Education and empowerment

Education is key to a happy and successful adulthood. By providing a high-quality education we can ensure that all our orphans have the best possible start in life. We will have facilities for schooling where children can learn in a safe environment and reach their full potential.

We want to provide more than the bare minimum. We will establish a play and learning zone in each orphanage so varied learning styles are catered for. Skills learnt during childhood will allow these children a better chance to escape poverty and become self-sufficient.

These teaching programmes will continue into adulthood and will include vocational training schemes and apprenticeships.

The staff are the most valuable asset in the orphanage. We will ensure they have the all the relevant training, tools and equipment they need to nurture the orphans, encourage learning and provide vocational training for their future.

Creating self-sustaining orphanages

When our orphanages become financially self-sustaining, they can generate their own income and reduce their dependence on donations. Save an Orphan intends to pave the way for self-sustainability through the following initiatives:

Establish connections between orphanages and local businesses — We wish to encourage local businesses to donate on a regular basis, not just money, but clothing, food and volunteers. We also ask for these businesses to help provide vocational training and jobs for the orphans when they are old enough. Local enterprises can therefore become stakeholders in orphanages.

Establish connections between the local school and orphanage — We will encourage schools to offer some degree of free schooling and volunteers to help in the running of the orphanages.

Local outreach in the community — We will encourage local residents to really embrace orphanage as part of the community. We put them at the centre of the affairs of the orphanage through local fetes and charity events.

Promoting green energy

Save an Orphan will utilise solar energy to reduce running costs and provide a long term solution to rising energy bills and climate change.

Staff will be trained to maintain and repair the solar panels, so they can sustain our orphanages long term. We are also investigating the feasibility of implementing simple and robust wind power systems. Sustainability is key.

Save An Orphan will also look at sharing the financial burden of implementing such systems with local businesses and governments where possible.
